Join New York City WILD! to explore Manhattan's last natural forest.
We start under the sprawling branches of a New York City Great Tree—a magnificent ginkgo—a block from getting off the A Train! Then we head for Inwood Hill Park. This glorious Manhattan forest, many trees dating from the Revolutionary War, is in its first late spring flush of green-ness. Colossal oaks, tulip and cottonwood trees and another grandfather ginkgo, are stunning. The literally treetop views from the top of this northern ridge overlooking the valley below contrasts eloquently with the “skyscrapers” of the southern tip of Manhattan. The traditional site where Mannahatta was purchased in 1626 from the Lenape is commemorated. Bring your lunch to eat while taking in the panoramic views of the New Jersey palisades. Resident Cardinals, Blue Jays, Chickadees and Woodpeckers seem like exotics in this very un-Manhattan-y northern part of Manhattan.
Meet at the last stop (207th Street station) of the uptown A Train, up on the street, on the northwest corner of the intersection of 211th Street, Isham Street and Broadway. Approximately 3-4 mile walk—includes a gentle though dramatic rise (and descent) in elevation. Return to your destination by the A Train (207th Street) or the #1 Train (215th Street).

Please read these directions in advance! How to get to the farm:
Location:
Enter the navy yard at Clinton Ave and Flushing Ave, and tell the guard at the gate (who will want to see your photo ID) that you're headed up to Brooklyn Grange at Building 3. Then make a hard left out once you're through the gate so that you're essentially walking and/or driving on Flushing Ave, but on the Navy Yard side of the fence. Our building is the third one you'll pass on your right -- it's the huge white and brown one with the loading dock that wraps all the way around it. The entrance is right in the center of the building, on the Flushing Ave side. Take the elevators up to 11, then make two rights, and head up the stairs for the farm.

Probably most New Yorkers know no more about Staten Island than an occasional trip on the Ferry with visiting out-of-towners—if that. Staten Island is another world—with more designated parkland than any other borough. On this trip, as well as drinking in the humbling panorama of the world-renowned New York harbor from the Staten Island Ferry, we'll see forest, swamps, fresh water ponds, sandy beaches, rocky Atlantic coast and bluffs, and amazingly, open grasslands. We’ll begin walking through the North Mount Loretto State Forest (acquired in 2008) and then proceed to the sky-full vistas of Mount Loretto Unique Area on Staten Island's south shore. The rich greens of late spring should be spectacular. Resident songbirds are already nesting and raising families – the woods should be lively with their songs. Bring your lunch to enjoy on the beach if the weather is cooperative (swimming may be possible, though the water may be cold and the beach is pebbly!)
Meet at 8:30 am at the Manhattan Staten Island Ferry Terminal at South Ferry for the 9:00 am boat. (Check the MTA Weekender for any connecting subway weekend service changes. #1 Train to South Ferry or R Train to Whitehall Street/South Ferry.) Meet at the top of the escalators in the main waiting room of the Terminal. (Ferries leave every 1/2 hour so don't be late!) Staten Island Railway (SIR) to Richmond Valley. Approximately 5 mile walk. Return on the SIR to the St. George Ferry Terminal, and Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan. Plan on a full day outing – we will try to be back to Manhattan by 4:00 pm, but depending on train and ferry connections, it may be later!
